Roulette is a casino game that most of us recognise thanks to the unique design of its central wheel. But do you know what the differences are between different formats of Roulette? Or that there even are multiple formats?

European Roulette
First up is the most classic format of Roulette – European. This one is the basis for many newer variations on the traditional Roulette format and gameplay, so it’s especially worth understanding.
A European Roulette wheel has a total of 37 pockets, with red and black pockets numbered from 1 to 36, as well as a green zero pocket. Thanks to the single zero, this wheel has a house edge of 2.7%.
Like in other Roulette formats, wagers are divided between the categories of inside and outside bets. Inside bets refer to wagers placed on single numbers or small groups of them, placed on the three central numbered columns of the table layout.
Outside bets refer to wagers placed on broader categories like red or black, as well as larger groups of numbers like dozens or each of the three central columns. These carry higher odds but lower payouts compared to inside bets.
American Roulette
The second most common Roulette format is American. It sticks quite closely to the core concept of European Roulette with one major distinguishing factor – an extra pocket.
Unlike the European wheel, there are 38 pockets on an American Roulette wheel thanks to the addition of a green double zero. This increases the chances of the ball landing in a green pocket, pushing the house edge up to 5.26%.
The double zero also adds an extra inside bet to the table, known as the top line bet. Covering zero, double zero, one, two and three, this particular wager typically carries a payout of 6 to 1.
French Roulette
The French Roulette variety is almost identical to European Roulette – which makes sense, since both come from the same place!
What sets French Roulette apart is the extra rules that only apply in this variety of the game. These are known as la partage and en prison, both applying to even money wagers (such as red/black or odd/even) when the ball lands in the zero pocket.
Plus, the table layout generally uses French as its language rather than English.
Quantum Roulette
This is an online Roulette variant based on the standard European format. The difference here is that the game features random multipliers that apply to straight up bets – those placed on an individual number.
Quantum multipliers mean that a handful of individual numbers will have higher potential payouts on a spin. Other than that, the format runs in the same way as a typical European Roulette game.
