The big question in 2024 is… What is T20 Cricket? Cricket has always been a popular sport for some but t20 has breathed new life and interest into a sport that many never watched or had an interest in.
T20 or Twenty20 Cricket is a variation of the traditional game played by two teams that have limited overs and a single innings, each team bats for a maximum of 20 overs (120 legal balls).
Shortest Form Of Cricket
The new much shorter form of Cricket has piqued people’s interest, due to the T20 World Cup, which was won by India in a thrilling final with South Africa.
Traditional cricket and test matches can be played for up to 5 days, whilst T20 Cricket has a maximum game time of about 3 hours with each side having a maximum amount of overs to bat.
The Basic Rules Of T20
Here are a few of the key rules that make T20 a more explosive entertaining and shorter version of the traditional format.
- There are twenty overs only per side
- Each bowler is restricted to a maximum of four overs
- Fielding restrictions in the first six overs – two fielders outside the circle with a minimum of two stationary fielders.
- Fielding restrictions for overs 7-20 – maximum five fielders allowed outside of the circle.
- A ‘no-ball’ is worth 2 runs, and the batsman gets a free hit after a no-ball.
- Each side has just 80 minutes to get through their 20 overs. There are 15 minutes between innings.
- There are run penalties for each over which hasn’t been bowled in the allocated time.
- The next batsman has 90 seconds after the fall of a wicket to get to the crease.
T20 leagues
There is a growing number of T20 Cricket Leagues that have sprung up since the 2007 ICC World competition.
The main T20 leagues in the UK are The Hundred which started in 2021 and the T20 Cup, There are also the Women’s T20 Cricket Leagues, Women’s Twenty20 Cup, Women’s Cricket Super League, and the Charlotte Edwards Cup.
T20 World Cup
The most popular event so far was the Mens ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 which gained a huge audience and a lot more people searching to find out exactly what T20 is.
T20 Crciket is only going to get more popular as it’s not too long, offers tons of entertainment and audiences that are growing all the time across many countries both in Europe, Asia, and across the world.
