It’s Tight at the Top in the Premier League, As we cross the halfway mark in the 21/22 Premier League season, there are three teams that have relentlessly pulled away from the rest of the pack, seemingly making the sprint for the title a three-horse race. These three top teams are; Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, and Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. All three managers have had their teams playing some stunning football during the past few months, and they’ve all clocked up some huge scorelines along the way.
It’s fascinating then, to try and work out which side will finally pick up the prize money in the Premier League, and get their hands on the trophy come May. Both pundits and fans are completely split on which team they think will be crowned champions, and it’s looking likely to be one of the most competitive title races in years.
Chelsea
The Blues managed to win the Champions League last season, which seemed a small miracle at the time, seeing as their manager, Thomas Tuchel, had only been in the job a matter of months. This showcased the qualities of the man’s tactical nous though, and also reminded everyone what a strong team Chelsea were when everything clicked into place. Since that European cup win, lots of people predicted that the London team was going to steamroll the Premier League this season, and leave everyone else in the dust.
Whilst that appeared to be coming true early on, they’ve actually struggled for the past few games, and have encountered a bit of a cold streak. This led them to drop down from the summit of the league to third place behind City and Liverpool, though only by a few points. They’ve also not been able to get their new star signing, Romelu Lukaku, firing and fully blended into the line-up.
A swarm of injuries though, has affected the club badly and has wiped out most of their midfield starters, so that could be a strong reason for the slump. The fans at Stamford Bridge will be praying that all their players stay fit as the campaign winds further on. If they do manage to, though, and Tuchel manages to plug their once impervious defence backup, Chelsea will be a hard team to stop.
Manchester City
Since Pep Guardiola arrived at the Etihad in 2016, he has managed to guide the blue half of Manchester to three league title wins. This includes last season’s convincing win, where after a shockingly slow start, they managed to storm the title and won by a mammoth twelve points. If anyone thought that Manchester City’s desire to win was going to wither this season, then their sitting pretty at the top of the table come December, should have answered any of those queries.

One major factor that Liverpool is going to have to deal with soon though, is the Africa Cup of Nations, which is due to start in January. This will mean that they will lose both their in-form strikers, Sadio Mane, who will represent Senegal in the African tournament, and Mo Salah, who will play for Egypt. This could deal them a seismic blow, as both of them have been involved in a staggering amount of goals for the club. Especially Salah, who has been lighting up the league so far, with an insane fifteen goals already, at the time of writing. Only time will tell if they can come through that period without too many points dropped.
