The Ayr Gold Cup, held annually at Ayr Racecourse in southwest Scotland, is one of the UK’s most prestigious sprint handicaps, attracting talented sprinters from around the world. First contested in 1804, this historic race has earned its place as a highlight of the British flat racing calendar, offering a unique blend of speed, strategy, and excitement.
The Ayr Gold Cup is the focal point of the three-day Ayr Gold Cup Festival, which will take place between September 18-20 this year.
With yet another jam-packed weekend of action expected at this year’s renewal – read on as we dissect the past three winners of this eagerly-awaited fixture.
2024 – Lethal Levi
Lethal Levi made a huge statement at last year’s Ayr Gold Cup – as the gelding went clear of his opposition down the straight to claim a three-length victory from stablemates Silky Wilky and Korker, who finished second and third respectively.
It marked Lethal Levi’s eighth career win and his second victory within a month – and as a result, the British thoroughbred well and truly put himself on the map. He failed to build on that performance in his subsequent starts, however, with the six-year-old going his first four races of the calendar year without a win.
However, Lethal Levi returned to form last time out, finishing first past the post in the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket in August. Will he put forth a similar performance to his one at Newmarket and be the first horse in more than 90 years to claim back-to-back Ayr Gold Cup triumphs? We will have to wait to find out.
With Lethal Levi expected to line up in the upcoming Ayr Gold Cup, he could prove the value pick across the day’s cards, with the six-year-old priced at a healthy 14/1 among many horse race betting markets.
2023 – Significantly
After coming agonisingly close to winning the Heritage Handicap at Doncaster a week prior, the Julie Camacho-trained Significantly brought great preparation with him into the 2023 Ayr Gold Cup.
He improved on his Doncaster performance at Ayr – with the gelding reigning supreme in the strong 24-horse field by a neck from Ramazan.
After a slow and awkward start in which he and his jockey Joe Fanning were reluctant to lead, the pair made steady headway and established themselves as a contender with a furlong remaining. Significantly, then pushed on over the final 110 yards and stormed over the top of the field to win his maiden Ayr Gold Cup title.
2022 – Summerghand
The 2022 Ayr Gold Cup was won by Irish thoroughbred Summerghand. The gelding entered the contest as a joint fifth-favourite, with Khanjar, Mr Wagyu, Commanche Falls and Bielsa all shorter in the betting lines.
However, his trainer, David O’Meara, would have been confident that his gelding could compete, given his showing in the Heritage Cup at the York Ebor Festival a month earlier – a fixture Summerghand went on to win by just shy of a length from Commanche Falls.
The 2022 Ayr Gold Cup ended in almost identical fashion, as Summerghand kept on well over the final half-furlong to reign supreme by a length from Commanche Falls once again.
