My Thoughts on Paul Townend’s Chances at Punchestown Grand National Trial

With the Punchestown horse racing festival meeting approaching, I’ve been reflecting closely on Paul Townend’s prospects on his four rides this Sunday. Here’s my take on his chances given the form, the competition, and the conditions.

Kiss Will – Beginners’ Chase (14:00)

Kiss Will enters this race with some solid form to build on, having run well at Leopardstown behind Koktail Divin previously. That experience at a higher level really suits him, but this beginner’s chase is a chance to see if he can put it all together and improve further. The challenge will be getting past some strong rivals like Shuffle The Deck and Soldier In Milan, but Kiss Will’s ability and Paul’s steadiness over fences should help him settle and make his move tactically.

Given Paul’s skill at navigating tricky finishes, I believe Kiss Will can improve on his previous runs and be firmly in the mix here. The key will be pacing the race well and picking his moments, which Paul is excellent at.

Uncle Pat – Grand National Trial (14:30)

Uncle Pat is the standout here, and Paul’s confidence in him is clear—and rightly so. Despite an absence of proven form over this trip on testing ground, Uncle Pat’s recent runs, especially at Roscommon, show plenty of promise. The horse is talented and has the scope to handle the demands of a Grand National Trial, which is no small feat.

Paul has had a good relationship with Uncle Pat and knows how to get the best out of him, especially in challenging conditions. This race offers a huge pot to win, and I can see Uncle Pat being a serious player if everything clicks on the day. His adaptability to ground and stamina look spot on for the challenge.

Dani Donadoni – Maiden Hurdle (15:32)

Dani Donadoni has had a somewhat mixed record, particularly with some disappointment at Leopardstown, but there’s reason to believe he can bounce back. This maiden hurdle is an opportunity for him to reset and show what he’s capable of. Paul clearly expects improvement and a better show.

The key here will be sharpness and confidence, and Paul’s calm approach is just what Dani Donadoni needs to find his rhythm and put in a credible performance. I’m hopeful this race will be the breakthrough he’s been looking for.

Gorvitho – Novice Handicap (16:02)

Gorvitho is a bit of a wild card, given his injury history and the tough handicap debut with a 115 mark. That said, there’s undeniable potential here if he can stay sound and reproduce some of the ability he showed before setbacks.

Paul will have to ride a patient race and manage Gorvitho’s energy carefully, especially against a competitive field. It’s a challenging ask, but not impossible. If Gorvitho finds his old form, Paul’s expertise could make a real difference, maybe even catching a few rivals out late.

Summary

Overall, Paul Townend’s rides this meeting look well balanced between form, potential, and challenges. His insight into each horse’s strengths and weaknesses shows he’s highly tuned in to what’s required. Particularly with Uncle Pat, the Grand National Trial shapes up as a key target where Paul’s tactical nous and the horse’s capabilities can combine for a big performance.

The other rides offer good chances for improvement and solid placements, with Kiss Will and Dani Donadoni especially looking to step forward, while Gorvitho remains a promising contender if all goes well.

If Paul can steer clear of trouble and the horses replicate their best work, Sunday at Punchestown should provide plenty of excitement and some rewarding rides for Paul and his connections.
