ANCIENT ROME 33/1 WINNER
Looking at this race with serious intention of finding value, I cannot comprehend why Charlie Hill’s stable debutant ANCIENT ROME is regarded as one of the outsiders in the market.
He hasn’t been at his best so far this year but rewind the clock back to his two-year-old/early three-year-old form and you will notice he placed in three Group 1 events behind horses such as Angel Bleu (twice) and Modern Games.
His only previous attempt at a distance similar to today was when down the field in the Qatar Prix Du Jockey Club and that proved inconclusive given the level of competition he faced in that Group 1 contest.
An opening handicap debut mark of 105 here isn’t exactly lenient but there’s no doubt he has plenty of class and Jamie Spencer, who has been riding as well as ever this season, takes the ride and is likely to hold him up off the pace before coming through late.
This four-year-old has majorly been undervalued by the bookmakers and is therefore worth an each-way experiment to see what he can hopefully do on British soil at an advised 33/1 with five places generally available.
